Where a screen door earns its price

Buy a security screen door if you want the opening protected while still using it — airflow, daylight, a view of who's on the porch. This is what most homeowners actually want and mis-search for.
Buy a security door if the opening is a back entry, a garage service door, or a vacant property where ventilation and sightlines are irrelevant and you want maximum deterrence per dollar.
The overlap case: a tested security screen door in a stainless mesh does most of what a barred security door does, looks dramatically better, and can carry an ember or hurricane rating on top. That's usually the better spend on a main entry.

Is a security screen door as strong as a security door?
A tested stainless-mesh screen door in a properly fastened frame resists forced entry comparably to a barred security door, and better than a decorative wrought-iron one. The difference is that it also lets air and light through, which is why it costs more.
Do I need a permit?
For a surface-mounted screen door over an existing opening, usually not. Inside a High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, or where an opening is part of a rated wildfire assembly, the system itself needs an approval or listing and inspection applies. Your installer should know which case you're in — if they don't, that's informative.
